A Brief Interlude About Houses

One of the cool things about this trip - particularly given that it will end in a new home for our family - is that we get to try on a lot of different houses and communities. We've stayed in quaint old fashioned houses and tricked out, modern ones. We've stayed everywhere from the deep desert to charming city neighborhoods. And, all the while, we've been mentally gathering information about what kind of home, and what kind of community we're going to want when we get to Oregon. Which brings me to the house in Cottonwood Falls.

It's hard to imagine liking a place more than I love this one. Don't get me wrong ... I have no interest in moving to Kansas. It's just that the owners of this house seem to have put all the right pieces in all the right places to build an amazing home and then put that home in the most perfect spot for that home.

According to the guest book, the house was built by a retired couple from Kansas City that wanted their dream getaway retreat. They found their ideal location and then imported reclaimed stone from a dismantled barn nearby. Then they went to town putting together a house that is so modern and has every amenity, yet is so traditionally of the place where it resides. It's hard not to see this place and immediately think of Little House on the Prairie or Andrew Wyeth's painting "Christina's World."

It has a cozy living space.

It has a charming and well-equipped kitchen and dining room.

It has the nicest office space I've yet had the pleasure of using.

And large, airy bedrooms.

And, windows everywhere ... each drawing your eye to those amazing views of the surrounding prairie.

This is the view from my pillow when when I wake up in the morning:

I'll leave it at that, other than to say that I will be doing a lot of mental processing about this house. How do I match the perfect synergy of design, materials, and place that this home has? We'll see.
