Last Friday we drove from Boise to Yellowstone by way of Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve. Central Idaho, like much of this region is a volcanic wonderland, and this is one of the hotspots. The park is so named because of the other-worldly collection of volcanic features, from lava beds to cinder cones. It's also a park that I've wanted to visit for a long time ... even if just for the cool name.
We took a couple of pleasant little walks, and, being halfway between Boise and Yellowstone, made a great rest break.
Turns out that, tucked between two major volcanic national parks - Lassen and Yellowstone - Craters of the Moon was a minor, but fun, diversion. We made a lot comparisons to Lassen, in particular the easy 5-minute stroll to the top of the Craters cinder cone compared to the grueling, hours-long slog up the one at Lassen.
After our quick moon-tour, we hopped back in the car and completed our trek to Yellowstone. We were greeted by a cozy, rustic log cabin and a good night's sleep.
