Leaving California (Mile 1,507 / Trial Miles: 39.5)

Yesterday, more than two weeks into our great adventure, we finally left California.

The week started uneventfully. We did a little hiking on Monday morning, and I spent that afternoon and Tuesday catching up on some work that needed attention, and Rachel and Nathan had a nice time relaxing together and reading.

On Tuesday evening, as we packed our things in anticipation of an early morning departure, we remarked how this visit really hadn't been long enough. Not that we needed to spend a lot more time in Lake Almanor, but rather that a longer stay just feels better. We've always said that this isn't a vacation - it's a lifestyle, if only for a few months. We need to achieve a balance of work, play, and everyday, mundane life activities. Five days in a place doesn't accomplish that. With that in mind, I looked forward to another of our lengthier stays in Boise.

We were up and out before the dawn on Wednesday morning. The smoke from relatively nearby fires had rolled in overnight, and the air quality had deteriorated greatly. So, we were happy to pull up stakes and say good bye to Lake Almanor.

The drive from Northern California to Boise took nearly 10 hours! That makes for a long day. To make a long day even longer, we were hit by a bouncing rock on the highway just before we reached the Oregon/Idaho border. It left a crack about the size of a baseball in the windshield of our 1-month old car. Ugh.

We arrived in Boise in time for a late-ish dinner. This was our first time visiting Boise (or Idaho, for that matter), so we were pleasantly surprised by our cool little neighborhood and our charming new home away from home.

It's also worth noting that along the way from California to Idaho an amazing thing happened. Roughly about the time we were passing through Burns, Oregon, Rachel was notified that she was OFFICIALLY no longer an owner of Belmont Shore Veterinary Hospital. In other words, after twelve years of unmitigated success, Rachel had traded her old life in for a new one and cut our last work-related tie to Long Beach. Goodbye old life ... hello new!

Here's what our progress looks like at mile 1,507.

Epilogue: Dreams Probably Come True

Having finally arrived in Oregon, our last major source of stress was finding a home. After all, we don't know the area, and, since I wo...
