Redwoods Weekend: Friday

We spent our weekend in Redwoods National Park, and boy was it amazing! Although I am a huge National Parks fan, I have to admit that this is not normally the kind of park that really excites me. I'm all about the huge vistas, mountains, gorges, and other incredible landscape features. Redwoods is basically about trees: amazing trees, but trees nonetheless.

I couldn't have been more wrong!

On Friday, I took a half day off from work, and we headed into the park to hike the aptly named Tall Trees Trail. This is not just any trail. This is a trail that can only be hiked by a special permit, of which the National Park Service only grants a limited number per day. To access the trail, you have to sneak past a locked gate (only the selected permitees get the combination) and drive 6 miles down a steep, unpaved road.

Once you arrive at the trailhead, it's like you've entered a different world, or at least a different time. I wouldn't have been the least bit surprised to see a T-rex come lumbering out from behind one of these ancient giants.

At the lowest point on the trail, we came across Redwood Creek. The water was so crystal clear that it was all we could do to not take a swig straight from the stream. Nathan perfected his frog-catching skills (or at least his trying-to-catch-a-frog skills). Much to our surprise we also found a small snake swimming in the water. Truly did not expect that!

After a long, strenuous hike, we headed back home. But the road brought us past a wild, beautiful beach, and we couldn't help but stop.

It was a long day, after a long week, and it was time to head home. Saturday was coming soon, and there was planning to do.
