A lot has happened in the last two days. Moving day was everything a moving day ought to be ... stressful, chaotic, and a little bit boring. There's a lot of cognitive dissonance in play when you've spent the last few months waiting for this day to come, you've shed blood, sweat, and tears the whole time to make it happen, then the day arrives, and there's little else to do than sit and watch while the moving crew packs your house into a truck to cart it away.
By about noon, the house looked empty, and we felt a hair's breadth away from hitting the road. We kept feeling that way until about 4 pm. That's a lot of time sitting idly in the house checking emails, looking for signs of progress, reading with Nathan, and looking at our watches. But, finally the time came when we had gone from this ...
to this ...
And, then it was time to say goodbye to our home of the last five years.
After that, we drove north for the last time as residents of Long Beach, a place that at one point I saw myself staying until I'd retired. My goodness, how things change.
The five-hour ride was pleasant and uneventful. We avoided the wildfires, tried not to notice the smoke, reminisced about our time in Long Beach, listened to podcasts, and played animal trivia with Nathan. All in all, not a bad way to start a new life.
Eventually, we hit Patterson, deep in the Central Valley, where we'd booked a night at the hotel right off the freeway. Incidentally, it was right next to the largest warehouse complex I'd ever seen. Amazon truly is taking over the world.
